At Avani Henna, I personally mix every batch of henna paste using only natural, food-grade ingredients. My commitment to clean, safe body art means you never have to worry about what's touching your skin. Every ingredient is carefully sourced and tested to deliver the richest stain with zero harmful chemicals.
What's In My Henna Paste
🌿 Henna Powder
The star ingredient. Henna comes from the dried, powdered leaves of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis), which grows in the arid regions of India, North Africa, and the Middle East. The leaves contain a natural dye molecule called lawsone that binds with the keratin in your skin to create a beautiful reddish-brown stain. I use only premium, body-art quality (BAQ) henna powder that is triple-sifted for a smooth, clump-free paste.
🍋 Lemon Juice
Fresh lemon juice helps release the lawsone dye from the henna powder. The mild acidity creates the perfect pH environment for dye release, resulting in a darker, longer-lasting stain. Lemon juice also acts as a natural preservative, keeping the paste fresh during application.
🍯 Sugar
A small amount of organic cane sugar is added to the paste to improve its consistency and adhesion. The sugar helps the paste stick to the skin during the drying process, allowing more dye to transfer for a deeper, richer stain. It also gives the paste a smooth, workable texture.
💧 Essential Oils
A small amount of eucalyptus or tea tree essential oil is added to enhance dye release. These monoterpene-rich essential oils help the lawsone molecule penetrate deeper into the skin, resulting in significantly darker stains. Only a few drops are needed — the amount used is well within safe levels for skin application. I also occasionally use lavender essential oil for clients who prefer a milder scent.
💧 Water
Filtered water is used to achieve the perfect paste consistency. The amount varies based on the henna powder batch and desired texture. Some batches use warm water for faster dye release, while others use room-temperature water for a slower, more controlled mix.

Natural Henna vs. "Black Henna" — Know the Difference
Not all henna products are created equal. It's critical to understand the difference between natural henna and dangerous imitation products:
| Natural Henna (What I Use) | "Black Henna" (Dangerous) | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Reddish-brown to deep mahogany | Jet black |
| Ingredients | Henna leaves, lemon juice, sugar, essential oils | PPD (para-phenylenediamine), industrial dyes, kerosene |
| Drying time | 15–20 minutes for paste to dry, leave on 4–8+ hours | Stains skin within 30 minutes |
| Stain development | Orange initially, darkens over 24–48 hours | Dark immediately |
| Safety | Safe for most people, including children & pregnant women | Can cause chemical burns, blisters, scarring, and permanent allergic sensitization |
| Shelf life | Must be used fresh or frozen (perishable) | Shelf-stable for months or years (a red flag!) |
| Smell | Earthy, herbal, pleasant | Chemical, harsh |
Why Ingredient Transparency Matters
